    The podcasters podcast
Though the listenership isn’t as high as other retro video game podcasts (or YouTubers). It’s the podcasters podcast. A number of big time podcasters and YouTubers in the retro video game scene recommend Retro Game Squad as one of - if not their favorite retro podcast. They are correct!

    One of my favorite podcasts
I just recently discovered the podcast, and man I can’t believe it took this long. Bright side is I have a ton of content to listen to in order to get caught up. As another reviewer said, the guys love what they do and you can hear it in their voices. I LOVE the ATHF references. I’ve watched the first 4-5 seasons multiple times, so I immediately recognize the quotes and get a good chuckle every time. Listening to the show is like sitting with a few childhood friends and reminiscing about games we played as kids. As someone that’s always been into retro gaming but also emulation as well, this show is a great way to get recommendations of games to check out. This is how a retro gaming podcast should be done. Keep up the GREAT work!

    Goes down smooth.
These dudes clearly love doing this, and love gaming. Listening to the show feels like hanging out with friends. Great anecdotes, excellent chemistry, fun game convos, and no cynicism. You guys rock, and I’m so happy you’ve found this outlet. Great journey so far. Great luck to ya!

    Best Retro Gaming Podcast
They are super informative, and have a way to really make you feel like you’re just listening to a natural conversation about retro gaming and all things related.

These guys are awesome. Not your typical snobby dudes.
I’ve been listening for quite some time now. If you dislike the snobby then give Alex, Jeff, and John a listen to. They bring a fresh, non cynical take to retro gaming and have a lot of fun doing it. 5 stars.

    Awesome awesome awesome!
Great podcast! I’ve been binging on every episode. Amazing chemistry between the main 3. Many times I’ve been brought to the brink of tears from laughing. These three are like the O.G. Three hosts of Top Gear from the UK - sure the talk about games is good, but I really listen for the personalities and chemistry. I loved the newest episode, with the portion talking with Alex aka retr0drift! It was great “getting into the weeds” level of detail about console restoration, repair, and modding! Listening to this podcast on my daily commute is like hot butter through knife! Keep up the great work Alex, Jon, and Jeff! 5 Stars!

    Amazing Retro Podcast!
I stumbled upon Retro Game Squad because of the Sega Master System episode and I enjoyed it so much that I went back and started listening to every episode from the start. The difference between Retro Game Squad and other Retro Game Podcasts is that Alex takes his show seriously and does a lot of research for the subject that is talked about. He is very knowledgeable and funny along with Jeff and John. Honestly, I’d give it more stars if I could!

One of the best podcast out there on retro gaming.
I’ve followed these gents since about their second season. I wasn’t there on the ground floor but close. I was so sad when they went on hiatus for a year but when they came back as a seasonal format I was ecstatic. Keep up the great work gentlemen. You are doing the lords work.

    Triggering my addiction
Love this podcast. I'm about the same age as Alex, one of the hosts of the podcast and listening to it is triggering my addiction to collect all these old games that I grew up with.

    Fun!
The podcast is just fun. The structure allows for great discussions, which are both informative and entertaining. Love it.

    Give these guys a shot
Well-rounded crew that takes a slightly different approach to retro gaming; upon choosing a theme for the episode they generally do overview on a smattering of older games rather than historical deep dives, humour and education ensue. The best aspect of this podcast is the open approach to the whole of the gaming spectrum from the old days; none of the overt Nintendo fanboyism that colors the most mainstream examples of this format will be found here.

A Mainstay of my Daily Commute
Expert reviews and discussion of games from the 8-bit through PlayStation 2 eras. I’ve picked up many games based on their recommendations and never been disappointed.

    Greatness
Awseome show- I’ve listened to every episode at least once (I’ve quit counting the saturn episode its been so many times.) Super high quality audio on par with an IGN-type podcast. So cool to hear real friends talk about old games. This show help rekindle my love for “retro” games and helped me realize how much more I like the classics as opposed to the new stuff. Cannot recommend this show high enough! Thanks guys for doing this show it really is great!

    Great find!!
I stumble across this podcast in search of an Retro gaming podcast. And what a gem have I found in listening to these guys. I listened to the Neo Geo special podcast and was hooked. Going back to listen to back episodes. You would be disappointed...

    Genuine and fun
I love this podcast so much. The hosts are passionate and really genuine. Listening feels exactly like sitting on the sofa chatting with friends about good (and bad) games. I’m glad the show is back and that they’re still devoting the massive time it must take to make this.

    Totally Awesome!
Been looking for a Retro gaming podcast with the right amount of funny, but detailed reviews. So glad I found these guys, They are are freaking awesome. Been listening for about 2 weeks now, about 6 episodes in. Love the format, and they talk my era NES 8-Bit to SNES/Genesis 16-Bit. Sitting back and enjoying them talking about all the games I've played and own, and introducing me to some new ones to hunt down. Rock on RGS!

    Awesome!
I unfortunately didn't stumble upon this until it ended, but I really enjoy this show! Jeff is a hoot!

    Best retro podcast around
This group found a way to not only reignite a passion for retro gaming but they managed to find a way to get you invested in them as individuals and that's a really rare thing. Leaving my first 5 star review... it's for retro game squad baby!
  • sdaflks;afdlkj
Great except when they say "like... like... like..."
Analysis is great, even when I don't totally agree with the opinions. The only annoying thing is they say "like" all the time and it is very distracting.

    Best ever
You guys do a hell of a job! Being stuck in a car for 8 hrs a day, your podcast makes the time not as miserable. Only problem is that I'm out of episodes to listen to.

    Fun show
Fun retro gaming show and easily the best one on the topic IMO.

"Like Hot Butter Through a Knife..."
This is the BEST retro game podcast. I'm saddened that it is winding down, but it has been a great ride. I absolutely LOVE the format. These guys are friends and not connected to the game industry (which is plus in my book - never name dropping the people they have interviewed). Just good times and (maybe) good games. As a young father, I certainly understand them stepping away. I wish them the best. Here is hoping - and a challenge - for someone to create another one just as good. We have plenty of game industry podcasts and need more well produced 'ameteur' podcasts like this. You will be missed.`

    Sad face
One of my favorite podcasts, and it's gonna be leaving in September. I feel like these guys are old friends.. At least we were told when, many podcasts just quit updating, so thanks for that. I wish we as the fans could talk you out of it, but I understand real life can be tough to do while doing a podcast. (No really I do one and have a small kid so can relate) even knowing that though, it breaks my heart to hear your leaving. Great cast guys be proud of what you've done these past 3 years.

Retro Game Squad Podcast =5 Stars!
I love love these guys. I listen to them at work and time flies ! I love the games they pick and they have so much to talk about. They talk everything RETRO from games to systems. I always look forward to their next episode.

    One of my first
This was one of the first podcasts I’d stumbled across and definitely one of my favourites. The format is great, the reviews are top-notch and Alex is a terrific host along with Jeff and John. Keep up the good work and I’ll be listening next month!

    Great for retro video games!
With Alex, Jeff, John, and sometimes a fourth, the Retro Game Squad relive and retell the joys of playing retro games ranging from the nostalgia NES days to the polygon powerhouse PlayStation and many more. John is fairly quiet, John is a bit enthusiastic, and Alex heads up the podcast in general. These main three pick various topics and play 'x' number of games relating to said topic. The joy is the fact that the games aren't always the main titles, but more unknowns. This leads to great discussions, banter, and history that gives the listener always something to enjoy. There is also fun interaction with the community by forums and an extra community pick game review section in their later to more recent episodes. If you are a fan of gaming, retro gaming, or even just have nostalgia for fun, Retro Game Squad is high on any gaming podcast list. A must listen.

    My Favorite Retro Gaming Podcast
The show is great!! I learn something new almost every podcast and have discovered some really awesome games because of it. Unlike some people I like that you guys do long shows. I have a long commute to my job so it's always nice to be able to listen there and back and still have some left over for the next day. Keep up the great job guys!
  • Rpp1988
    My favorite podcast.
I love this podcast. I get excited when I see a new episode, as I learn something new each time. The crew is a little uneven (Jeff can be really annoying, John should talk more) but their personalities create some interesting banter. Overall, the team is fun and they pick great games. Alex does a great job spearheading the attack and providing context and history. Keep up the great work!
  • Chico Sixtoes
    Excellent podcast
This podcast has reminded me of so many great games and clued me into some I needed to revisit. I loved the Rampage review and almost choked when they reviewed Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat. Seriously one of my favorite time passing games and is probably in the system right now. River City Ransom was also awesome. A personal request of mine would be for a Final Fantasy episode or Genghis Khan for NES. Keep up the great work fellas!
  • WashAwayTheWeak
    Great, maybe not for everyone.
As mentioned by another reviewer the episodes are long, but instead of insisting they release on a weekly schedule I say listen in sections. I usually stop after they finish a section (either by console, number of bits, etc) and pick it up a few days later. Also, the editing is a bit weird. Some of the transition songs seem to play for what seems like a minute straight (which doesn't sound like a lot, but can break the pacing) while others seem to last 15 seconds at best. But hey, these are a group of guys who are doing the podcast for fun and aren't professionals, so who can blame them? Each host (and guest) brings a different dynamic and after listening to a few episodes you get a feel for the cast. Overall, it's a solid listen and I tune in whenever a new episode is released. I would probably have given 4 stars but I wanted to counteract the salty young man who left a one star review because he's sexually frustrated. Cheers guys, keep up the good work!
  • Nerd in the World
    Enjoyable but lengthy
Episodes are super long and could probably be broken up and released weekly. A lot of interesting games mentioned and definitely inspired me to look into some more esoteric retro titles.
  • Noel86
    No credibility
One of the guys didn't even recognize the music from Super Mario 2. Seriously. Plus he sounded high the whole podcast. Lame
  • Leefo3
Great Podcast that needs no changes
I definitely recommend this Podcast. Funny, entertaining and very informative. All members speak clear and loud enough so you can hear them so the quality of this podcast is very good. Please don't change up this Podcast as it is just fine.

    Fantastic in every way!
I heard about this podcast on Jay and Silent Bob Get old, when one of the guys plugged this show. I decided to give it a listen, and became addicted instantly. I have since downloaded every episode, and listened to them all. I drive for a living from 3 am until 12 noon daily, and this is one of 3 podcasts I listen to daily. They cover a wide variety of topics, and do such a great job that it is like a hot butter thru knife! (if you listen you would understand) I highly recommend this podcast if you love retro gaming, or even just have an interest in old games.

    Great retro game podcast
This monthly adventure into video games from the 20th century is a great listen, especially for work. Each episodes cover around 10 games and presents a great amount of diversity within their monthly theme. They provide just the right amount of analysis and background on each game to inform and entertain the listener. It makes for a great two hours every month that I always look forward to. Keep up the great work.
  • Khelvins
Like hot butter through a knife
These guys are unconventional in that many of the games reviewed are older than two of the casters. It's really cool to see them look at old games without the rose colored glasses that come with nostalgia and see that many "hold up" to the test of time. My only complaint is it's a monthly podcast and I want more content! Keep up the good work guys
  • Rjrw92
Amazing PODCAST! A top 5 for sure!!
If you are a gamer, more so a "retro" gamer in your late 20s-mid 30s these are your best friends. The pod cast has very good production value, the 3 host all perform great research and but a lot of effort into an amazing show. I am very glad I found it.

    Love these guys!
This is an awesome round table discussion of three gamers love for retro games. Categories are always awesome and the passing of the torch from Alex to the guys is awesome to listen to.

    Old school gaming ROCKS!
This is a god send of a podcast. I have been looking for about a week for a good cast to talk about retro gaming. I don't believe in Xbox and Playstation games being "hard" - so easy they have a strat guide out the day the game does. Old school games didn't have that...and no internet either. Retro games were the best and tested your mettle and thinking - it's why games today will NEVER come close. RGS podcast reflects that. Hearing you all talk about these games bring back SO many memories and countless sleepless nights. Long live RETRO GAMING and Retro Game Squad!

    Awesome work guys
Love the show, I just started listening and it's great. As a collector this is a great show to listen to for tips on new games to pay. One thing though, you guys totally missed Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara on Saturn!
