Founding Son: John Quincy's America

397
History #64

Bob Crawford of The Avett Brothers explores the post-presidential legacy of America’s sixth president: John Quincy Adams. Though often only seen as a failed one-term president and the son of a Founding Father, Adams spent his final decades in Congress fighting the slavocracy and forming a bridge between the founding of America and the era of Lincoln. Founding Son features Patrick Warburton as the voice of John Quincy Adams, Nick Offerman as the voice of Andrew Jackson, and Grey DeLisle as the voice of Louisa Adams.

Very, very interesting story of John Quincy Adam’s contributions to American democracy. Well told with a lot of good background to make the story whole.

    Well done!
I enjoyed listening and learning a lot about a man I can’t believe I knew so little about before. Thanks for the series!

    Phenomenal podcast
I’ve long been an admirer of John Adams and have considered myself an armchair expert on his life and family, but I learned so much about John Quincy in this podcast that I’d never known or hadn’t known the full story. I’ve always held him in esteem but this podcast made me realize just how extraordinary he was. Flawed and complex, but incredible to his last breath. Not exaggerating when I say that this is one of the best-made podcasts I’ve ever listened to.

    Well executed, educational, & interesting!
This is one of the most well executed podcasts I’ve listened to. The sound is great, Bob has a great storytelling voice, and the voices in character really make this an interesting podcast. History has never been my favorite subject, but I looked forward to listening to this. Thank you, Bob, and please make more! #PressOn ❤️

    Fabulous!!! ❤️‍🔥
If you are interested in history, this is a must listen. If you don’t like history, try this one as it is formatted as a story time. Mr. Crawford I listened to you on the Mike Rowe podcast, The Way I Heard It, & was fascinated. Looking forward to your next podcast series. Thank you for a beautiful journey! Investigating the Curiosity Network too.

    Good Podcast
I first hear about Bob Crawford on The Way I heard it with Mike Rose, so I wanted to check this podcast out. Good information about JQA.

    A balanced view
Bob Crawford really gets to the dichotomy in the life of John Quincey Adams. He was an elitist New Englander who stood head and shoulders above everyone around him intellectually (and let them know it), but after a fairly disastrous one term presidency, he ultimately served as the voice of the abolitionist movement in the US. He was a very complex character, and this is the most balanced view of his life I have ever heard!

Fills in the blanks regarding this President
This podcast is a satisfying and entertaining look at Adams and the other historical figures surrounding him.

    Just Great!!!!

Holy crap! This is good stuff.
This was a great podcast. Bob Crawford took a man who’s life has always been referenced, or made into a trivia answer, and made us realize how truly important John Quincy Adams was. Not only that but he also shed light on how ridiculously corrupt American media was. He did this with humor and feeling. I loved how he would “paraphrase” or make statements like “let’s be honest here”. I’m a grown man of 50, fully capable of hiding my emotions and I got emotional in the last episode. So fricken well done. I will forever listen to anything Bob Crawford is involved in.

    Fascinating
So easy to simplify history but Bob shows how complicated and fascinating it is. Have enjoyed every episode.

    Excellent!
I had heard about this podcast from another podcast. I love history podcast. Especially American history. And early American history is the best. Loved every minute of listening. Really hope they do another series about another founding father/son

    Loved it
I was born and raised just north of Boston. Still live here. Such history and so much I didn’t know. It was great!!

    Founding Son
An intuitive look at a elitist, failed President who was enlisted to fight for the ignorant, “palsied”, and overlooked men and the ideals enshrined in the Constitution that protected them. An informative and occasionally humorous recognition of an ex-president who rallied against two misguided compromises and bridged the gap between our founding and the war that ended the National stain those compromises left on our democracy. This work borders on brilliance.

    Outstanding
Bob, a great story told by a wonderful story teller. Very well done. When can we expect the next on? Thank you!

    Very well done
Very good, thoroughly researched story of a great man who is often overlooked in the balance of American history. Bob has a folksy, easy going manner in his storytelling and the voices of the various actors really brings the characters to life. Can’t wait for the next one!

    Thank You
Luckily I stumbled upon this gem and spent my day with Pres. J. Q. Adams as well as the excellent staff of Founding Son who successfully brought this history to life. I thank you all.

    Great Story, Well Told
Illuminating and thoughtful, Founding Son introduces listeners to a significant American figure footnoted by history. The research, reporting and narration stands apart from formulaic true crime podcasts.
  • mrtropp
    Fantastic and worth the listen
I’ve always admired JQ Adams, and this podcast series reminded me why he’s such an unsung hero. He doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being the first powerhouse anti slavery politician, but this podcast goes a long way towards correcting that omission. Well done!
  • jewel-finn
Wonderful Podcast on JQA’s later career
I heartily enjoyed this podcast & appreciate its focus on a less touched on aspect of JQA’s life: his post-presidential career in Congress. Great voice acting, excellent historian contributions & Bob’s presentation & scholarship bring this chapter of American history to life.

Jackson fan who now like JQA

    Fantastic Historic Work
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Great job to the writer and voice actors. I feel as if I need to go back to this period of history, and to Adams in particular, and give it another look!
  • kellogg99
    Great storytelling!
I learned so much and was engaged the whole time. An entertaining look at a period of American history that is often overlooked and forgotten!

    Almost as great as 1865
Love hearing all the history the casually skipped over in school.

Interesting subject in an interesting style
This was a fascinating podcast that I looked forward to listening to every week while it dropped and will probably go back and listen to again. I enjoyed the knowledgeable guests as much as the star voices. On top of all that, I learned a lot and especially enjoyed how the podcast helped to connect some of the dots of history and the influence of one event on another.

Fantastic Podcast About an Extraordinary Man
John Quincy Adams is a fascinating figure of US history. This format of this podcast is quite unusual in it’s presentation, but works extremely well for this type of subject matter. I would love to hear more from this creative team.
  • DetailDevil
    Entertaining and informative
Entertaining and informative podcast. Fun listen. For the person who said JQA wasn’t the only president to serve in the House, that’s not what was said. He mentioned he was the only president to serve in Congress AFTER his presidency, as most presidents don’t hold office after reaching the top job.
  • capecodtad
    Excellent
Very interesting and informative. Looking forward to his next podcast. You can love history and share it.

    Excellent Historical Podcast
I am just finishing the John Adams miniseries on HBO and this is the perfect podcast to follow that up! I love the use of the different voices and enjoy learning more about JQA and his story! Bob Crawford has done an excellent job at presenting the information in an easy-to-understand way. Even the intro music is great!

    Very interesting podcast!
Interesting podcast… filling in blanks in my knowledge of American history! Now I want to read some more Adams history! Hoping this format continues with focus on some other giants in American history!

    Old Man Eloquent
John Quincy Adams courageously stood against slavery. He richly deserves to be remembered for his principled stand against that hideous institution. Bravo 👏 to all involved in this podcast. He made his twilight years a triumph through his actions in the U.S. House.

    Fantastic
Great combination of historical facts, story and dialogue. JQA and other characters are relatable and compelling. Brings to life a period in history which we barely learned about in school.

    Accessible, essential history
Bob Crawford does a masterful job of making this history accessible and connecting it to our current political landscape in ways that are clear but not heavy handed. The voice actors give it a very human touch. Highly recommend!

    Great podcast!
I have been a fan of John Quincy Adams since I was told that I was his descendant. I really like the podcast and the experts are first rate. I am curious as to why it was decided to start in 1824. Samuel Flagg Bemis believed Adams had a very important role as the architect of US foreign policy. The presidency was almost a interim period between a dynamic career as ambassador to Prussia, Russia, Great Britain, and Secretary of State. Adams is widely considered to be the best Secretary of State. Ever. The second distinguished careers was in the House of Representatives. I look forward to future episodes.

PATRICK WARBURTON VOICES JOHN QUINCY ADAMS!
Patrick Warburton sparks joy in me every time I hear his voice I know Bob Crawford primarily from The Road To Now, a fantastic American history podcast that offers insightful perspectives on the wider context of historical events that led to the world we now live in. I expect this show to also hold to this high standard of information and entertainment Very exciting!
