Juvenile monologue and bizarre mother dialogues. Not a helpful podcast about thru hiking. Looking for better content not self centered ruminations

Like listening to a friend talk
I’m invested because I enjoy listening to his journey, highs and lows. His monologues are always interesting and I have enjoyed listening to how he has evolved over the months with his emotions, happiness in life etc. A lot of it is boring, I think the editing could be done better in regard to the audio with trail family conversations. I feel like I’ve come up on a group of friends and no one is bothering to explain the inside joke, so I leave. I’ve had to fast forward through their chatter, especially the “would you want to be x or z” episode. It got really interesting when he starts dating HoneyFox and hopefully the editing shows how that evolves.

    Pointless
As an avid hiker I was so excited for this. But each 13 min episode isn't worth the time spent listening, even that exceedingly short time. It has no point, no direction, it should be a diary in someone attic.

    Begrudgingly hooked!
Despite my better judgement, I can’t stop listening and dreaming of days on the Trail. Cody is corny, granted, but his folks are adorable, his “trafamily” is endearing, and actually his tales are teaching me, linking me to a new mindset and a potential new future. I’m enjoying!

No reason to invest in this hike
It seems like a personal audio diary of a hiking trip in which nothing interesting happens but was nevertheless made into a publicly broadcast podcast. There was never a reason or tug for me to care about this.

    Too much of a hassle
I love the idea. And Cody seems cool and likable enough. But if you cut out the musical intro, ad breaks, and the obligatory sounds of footfalls that bridge segments, there is virtually no content here. The entirety of the podcast should be one or two episodes imo. I started this up on a long drive and basically all I can tell you is that Cody’s mom doesn’t want him to do the hike and maybe a few details about Better Help online therapy. They’ve got a lot of tape, obviously. Get back in the lab and edit this down into a different podcast imo.

    Uninteresting
I was excited to listen to a hiking podcast and really tried to give this one a fair chance. The short episodes are at times awkward and disjointed, and haven’t been entertaining or informative (I’ve listed to 12 episodes). I probably should have stopped listening after episode 7, where the host spends the entire recording describing the photos on his iPhone as he deletes them. Wouldn’t recommend this one.

    Crazy coincidence brought me here.
Came here from Bigfoot Collectors Club. Weirdly enough I have been working on my alcohol sobriety and removing bad habits in my life. I lost myself in the music industry and partying. Since then I have been trying to find new outlets for stress in my life. Listening to podcasts has been how I’ve been passing most of my time at work the past year. But for my physical health I’ve been doing a ton of camping, nature hikes, and walking. I had my eyes on a ten year training plan to hike the Appalachian trail all the way. I had never even heard of Thru Hiking until you showed up on the Awakening episode of BCC. But once I heard your story I was completely hooked. I’ve also been leaning towards hiking the PCT instead of the AT now. I’d never heard of that one before but after researching the trail more it’s almost calling me. Good luck on your journeys man. I’m super excited to hear the rest of this one.

Waiting for something to happen…I’m done
So I’ve listened to all 17 of the episodes so far, waiting for it to get good. The narrators self indulgences give the listener not much insight into long distance hiking. The only detailed descriptions of trail life were when Cody got sick and was puking and crapping. There are so many good pods on this subject, but thru is not one of them.

Yes… I am so here for this
I saw Cody on TikTok last year, I came for the PCT content (never heard of it before then) and stayed for Cody. First of all, he reminds me of my bother, probably a personal detail but he feels so familiar and human. I was curious about his story and the way he told it was compelling… but on TikTok the videos were far and few. But now he’s back. And to be honest the hiatus from the socials made me want to hear his story more. I want to know what compels someone to do this crazy thru hike, I want to hear about the culture of this hike, and I want to hear about the aftermath. How did this change his life? I don’t even care if “learns or gains” anything I just want to hear his story… even the boring parts. Thanks for sharing.

    Swiped idea/ so un-original
Hey, Reece Witherspoon called and wants her idea back she did a crappy movie about. You could have at least mentioned this right up front.

    Meh
As someone who listens to a lot of podcasts I was excited for a new thru hiking pod. Sadly this pod is released so slowly and feels so directionless that I can’t seem to keep interest.

    Not sure it’s for me…
Pros: Cody has a nice voice, and is a good storyteller with a story to tell. I liked the first few episodes with the banter with his family. And then the…. Cons: The podcast seems to lack direction. Jumps around from a goofy episode about a song created out of a catch phrase, to an odd meditation episode, to an episode that was just him goofing around with some new friends he met. I was hoping for a podcast that focused on his days on the trail that focuses on his trials, tribulations, breakthroughs and his quest to stay sober. Instead it jumps around a lot and seems to focus on more of the “goofy” things.

Saw Cody on TikTok last year…
Saw Cody on TikTok last year, and I got invested in his story and then he kinda disappeared. I’m very excited to follow along on his Journey. I’ve been enjoying the episodes and conversations so far! As a female solo traveler, so many of the conversations Cody has with his parents, mainly his mom are so relatable! Keep up the good work Cody! *** Just curious, is the guitar strumming in the intro music Cody playing? 😆 ***

    Let’s go thru it!
It feels like I’m walking with Cody, except I don’t have to get a blister! Or sleep outside! Or, in fact, walk! I got to witness Cody arrive at Podcast Movement after he trekked from L.A. to Vegas to take the stage on the last conference day - an incredibly charming stunt! (Which probably deserves its own podcast treatment, no? Urban thru hiking… Where? How? Camping??) As a host, Cody comes across as genuine and curious - he’s new to this thru hiking world and searching for personal clarity and insight, which makes it incredibly inviting to accompany him on his journey. The sound design is evocative and lush, without overshadowing the narrative, and listening with high-quality over-ear headphones actually makes me feel immersed - hearing the steps, the breathing, the birds, the fabric of the tent. Even the ‘quiet’ Cody calls our attention to! The interviews with his parents are kind of achingly wholesome. The clips of other hikers sharing their culture and trailspeak are friendly with a splash of awkward, which sounds very true! The editors have juxtaposed them well with personal journal clips in which Cody expresses the worry that maybe no one will want to talk to him, etc. I hope this is the beginning of a thru-line where we get to hear many of the ways reality contradicts his inner critic. I’m looking forward to hearing more about the mental health aspects involved - both the breakdowns that lead to the journey, and what surfaces while on the road. P.S. I hope future episodes won’t shy away from non-PG aspects of the journey! What was that pink thing again?

    Informative
As someone with little to no knowledge of thru-hiking, this show is informative and entertaining. Excited to hear more!

    Really inspiring
I’m here for it! Never hiked the PCT but I’m so curious about it. Def going to keep listening.
  • ktepper
    First four episodes!
Saw him on tiktok!! Are really fun and inspiring - you kind of don’t realize just how much work goes into getting ready for a hike like this. I dont think ill be hiking like this anytime soon - just gonna stay in my room but enjoy this podcast
