carly960ExcellentThis is the second time I’m listening to all three podcasts. Gavin is one of our most important and trusted sources of history. Gavin if you read this I’d like to say it’s nearly impossible to figure out how to write this review! Thank you! Please give us a season 4😊

JFla1413Historically Accurate- shockingly meaningfulAs proof that the radical far-right movement of 30 years has now captured our government, narrator Garret Graff cites at the end of this series how President Trump announced- in Waco, Texas- the beginning of his 2024 campaign for president on the anniversary of the US Government attack and massacre in Waco, Texas. (Waco is the opening saga of this well-knit and expertly done series).

Lou KotsinisMust ListenThis may be one of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened to; deeply researched, well-paced and just the right amount of dramatic narrative. Listen to this podcast if you want to learn about what’s brought us to our current state of affairs.

94momof3Mindless rhetoricSaying that the senseless loss of life at sandy hook was from a “weapon of war” with no mention of the problem of mental health that the shooter displayed tells you all you need to know about the propaganda spewing from this podcast. Everything is because of the evil gun even though most of these shootings have more to do with the deranged minds of the people committing the crimes and the fact that the laws already on the books aren’t enforced!

EmmieandpreciousGreat showEach season is outstanding

The Real Zen BoyCouldn’t even make it thru one episodeThe blatant bigotry, the misinformation, and the anti-American hate oozes from top to bottom. This show seems to be out to prove that the left wing can be just as whackadoodle as the right wing. If it wasn’t so sad, it would be funny. One of the things that did make me laugh was trotting out the long discredited narrative that native people were part of some peaceful upotia where everyone got along with no war, totally egalitarian, etc, etc. It was absurd when it was put forward in the 60s and 70s, and now is just straight up intentional misinformation. The native tribes were often vicious, enslaving and torturing weaker tribes. Colonists learned their most extreme warring techniques from the natives.

meinconcordWell doneGreat production n content. When will we Americans deal with this mess of guns?

DavidR93Verbal MoviesEach season of Long Shadow is like a beautifully crafted documentary film. I discovered Long Shadow a few weeks ago, and since then have dedicated every free moment of my time to listening exclusively to this podcast. I just finished all three seasons, and cannot wait for future seasons. I feel like I learned so much about my own country. Things that I have lived my whole life without knowing, despite serving in the Army, and living in the United States for my entire life.

Dr. NomecatGorelick wrote a memo concreting that wall between the FBI & CIAYou know Jaimie Gorelick wrote the memo strengthening that wall between the CIA and FBI, which she then refused to testify to her own 911 commission about, right? She left the Clinton administration after writing that wall memo and from 1997-2003 she was vice president of Fannie Mae, which is when she got ultra rich off their 10 Billion dollar accounting scandal. Then she represented BP and used her Obama admin connections to make sure they didn’t have to pay to clean up the Gulf oil spill in 2003. There’s more of Jamie Gorelick generally acting like her mentor, Alan Dershowitz, until she shows up to represent Jarod and Ivanka while they skirted white house nepotism laws and security clearance requirements, which endanger us all to this day. Gorelick structured the Kushner’s financial agreements, promising divestments that never happened. She ends up as council to the J6 committee, recommending limitations every step of the way, just as she did with the 911 commission and the OKC bombing in 1995.

Run dmccccccccPowerfulThis was so well done. I was moved to tears multiple times.

ALK444How about a correctionIn the episode entitled “An AR for everyone” you assert Robin broke no laws by giving a rifle to a minor. That is false. Straw purchases are absolutely illegal. Sure, I can give a gun to my children, but I annoy buy one on behalf of a prohibited person. Robin’s was a straw purchase. I doubt you’ll do anything though. This is not a serious show.

KKim3355True history of guns in AmericaOne of the most important podcasts. Wish every American could listen and learn the true history of guns in America and the second amendment.

Kate GearinI’ve been a die-hard since day 1Season 3 of Long Shadow achieves the same magic as the prior two. With nuance and care, Graff and the entire Long Shadow team deliver another engrossing, necessary look at the American-only epidemic of gun violence. The finale episode, Generation Lockdown, proved most fascinating to me. Throughout the entire episode, I wished for Graff to write a book about Gen Z and gun violence, exploring pivotal life moments that, in a lot of ways, robbed them of traditions every generation longs to experience. I know in my gut that this generation will help resolve and end the mass shootings committed against school children. As a millennial, I feel far too cynical to hope. When we did not change after Sandy Hook, it became harder to understand what would have to happen to spark a redirection in gun policy. Graff’s writing style would do this subtopic immense justice, and those in older generations, like me, need to understand Gen Z’s conditioned peril. Highly recommend!

New England pilotAmazing podcast. A must listenCan not recommend Long Shadow enough. It is riveting. It should be required listening in history classes. Give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.

ShotataduckI tell people about this podcast all the timeI just finished listening to 'Long Shadow' Season 3: In Guns We Trust, a well-executed follow-up to their Season 2, The Rise of the American Far Right. While Season 3 is somewhat more meandering, this mirrors the complexity of the subject it covers. Garrett Graff excels as a host and documentarian, adeptly handling complex topics across all three seasons. He provides essential context to current American dynamics by highlighting pivotal moments that have subtly shifted American culture one event at a time until looking back it feels like a massive shift. One memorable quote from Season 3 comes from Robert Moses, who explains how power and change converge: 'Things happen when leaders are available, ready, and eager to take advantage of the logic of events. And even then, the entire result is only achieved through a series of limited objectives over a surprisingly long period of years.' All three seasons are captivating and definitely worth a listen. Personally, I found Season 2 to be the most compelling overall."

HeavenleighhFantasticIf you enjoy Throughline, you will probably enjoy this podcast, which gives a really interesting background on how we came to this terrible moment in time of daily mass shootings
-
msulimomust listen!excellent content and commentary including all the context and history we need to know about these important issues!
-
LCampbell52MisleadingSeason 3 started off as informative and entertaining. Quickly realized it was more anti-gun than anything else.

Dog & Cat WomanExcellent and very comprehensiveI have loved this. I’m almost through all 3 seasons and will be starting season 4 soon. Heartily recommend.

Kacky07Wait!?! There’s a second season! How did I not realize there was a second season to this intriguing podcast chockful of stuff we need to know?!?! So good was the first season I thought I was going to listening to it again. I’ll definitely do that after the 2nd season. Highly recommend a listen. Thanks @dailybeans for the interview that turned me toward this podcast. And, today, 04/30/2024, a favorite podcast of mine collides with this one! Love “Scene on Radio” too!

samspnc1BalancedThe information delivered is thoughtful, non partial, and balanced. As reporting history & information should be.
-
GranNicFascinating and Well - ResearchedThis is quite a balanced look at the history of mass school shootings starting with Columbine. The NRA background and response is also examined closely.
-
Jack 204One sided“ …. the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Not the right of the individual states. Not the right of the state militias. The right of the people. In the Bill of Rights, every other reference to “the people” is a clear reference to the citizenry. Any other reading of the 2A is tortured. Combined with the fact that things such as gay marriage, campaign contributions and inter racial marriage have been deemed to be rights under the Constitution without being specified at all in the Bill of Rights, the notion that the 2A does not give rise to an individual right is absurd. Also, I can’t help but laugh when gun control people (like the host) give lip service to protecting the rights of hunters and target shooters. Most people own guns for personal protection. Gun control people don’t even feign lip service to the right to self defense. Their ultimate goal is incremental confiscation and they don’t hide it well. To balance things a bit, the producers of this podcast might want to mention the thousands of instances every year where lawful gun owners defend himself/herself or others from attackers. Oh and why did the NRA start focusing on gun owners rights after WWII? Probably because (1) that’s when a huge spike in crime occurred and (2) when liberals started trying to disarm the populace.

EC-10-1982Gets Better With Every SeasonUPDATED REVIEW: The 9/11 series was gut-wrenching but riveting and taught me something new about a day I thought I understood — without partisanship or exploitation. Season 2’s exploration of the rise of the far right was a clear-eyed, sober-minded account — often disturbing, sometimes incredibly complicated — exploration of how our country got to be as divided as it is. And now, Season 3: “In Guns We Trust,” which at least based on the first two episodes gets the distinction of the best podcast I’ve ever heard. On any subject. It is as compelling as a true-crime story, as engaging and entertaining as a news podcast, but it offers more insight than any other exploration I’ve yet heard of guns and their place in this country. Despite the right-wing critic here, it is NOT a liberal’s fever dream. This is a meticulously researched and reported show that is both hard to listen to and completely unmissable. It should be mandatory listening for audiences of ALL political persuasions and beliefs. Excellent work.

E$3Excellent programTimely topics w/ depth & historical reference that is lacking in our current news for entertainment landscape. I am truly better informed w/ each episode.

Drp3gunnerNarrator is just left wing version of trump.Usually these podcast are pretty good but this one is just crappy half truths and contradictions. It reminds me of trump giving a press conference. I am pretty sure they put a bunch of headline stories in a paper bag and drew them out and said “okay, how is this trump’s or white people’s fault?” I did listen to all of them and they don’t get better with their rhetoric even though they do nothing but bash right wing media outlets for spouting their rhetoric. Example of contradictions: Made sure to mention that “90% of BLM protest were peaceful” but also made sure to add in that Kyle Rittenhouse (who wasn’t affiliated with any groups) shot 3 people. They made mention of right wing protest after right wing protest but only Kyle Rittenhouse shot anyone shouldn’t that be 90% peacefully too. Example of half truth: trump called for social distancing and 4 weeks later called for freeing people from lockdowns in certain states. It was only 4 weeks later but narrator fails to mention that though states had same or higher number of Covid cases but had more extreme lockdowns then rest of country. What the narrator fails to realize is that EVER episode was not the result of trump or white supremacy or rise of the radical right. All of this is a result of government overreach. Waco- government overreach, ruby ridge- government overreach, Oklahoma federal building- because of government overreach in first 2, covid lockdowns- government overreach, George Floyd- government overreach, January 6th-well you have government officials escorting protesters around and opening doors so yes government overreach. You didn’t learn anything. You are just preaching a different rhetoric. You are no better than trump. But go ahead and prove me wrong. I will be waiting on your series on the rise of the radical left next.
-
KelseyNolaSeason 2Great podcast, but in the last episode of season 2 the host accidentally says “January 5, 2020” several times when he’s clearly talking about what was happening the day before the January 6, *2021* attack. It’s an easy slip up because he’s having to refer to the 2020 election so frequently when discussing the 1/6/21 attack, but you’d think an editor would’ve caught it. Every time it happens I have to check myself that I’m not supposed to be switching gears to listen to something that happened early in 2020 before Covid, the election, etc.
-
AirbrushGaryAnother Mainstream Leftist Media MouthpieceThis podcast forgives any and all transgressions from left wing groups such as BLM and ANTIFA while entirely vilifying any dissenting groups or opinions. Don’t waste your time if you’re seeking a more balanced reporting of covered events. Also, I’ll add that the narrator sounds like he needs some antidepressants and will bite you to sleep.

Ugh111Left biasMaybe think harder & not villainize half of your fellow citizens.

Average dufferNot exactly balancedFirst off, the facts that are presented are not totally accurate as I know them. The alt right is a problem. There is no denying that. The issue with season 2 is there is some strong implied bias against those that own firearms LAWFULLY as well as calling veterans part of the problem with the alt right. In the episode about the Jan 6th riot, the narrator calls the protests over the murder of George Floyd “mostly peaceful” and not ONCE calls out the alt left for the billion dollars of damage. I know for a fact that the PNW (Portland and Seattle) had major issues. Look up CHOP/CHAZ to see proof. He presents the police as jack-booted thugs and the poor “peaceful” protestors as just minding their business. This is a straight up LIE. I wonder if the producers of this podcast would be willing to investigate Antifa and other left wing domestic terror groups? Trying to hunt down federal buildings seems oddly reminiscent of the BLM standoffs the narrator calls out. After calling the alt right decentralized terrorists, one would think Antifa being decentralized would also warrant a deep look. Alt right and alt left domestic terrorists are not a fallacy. You can have both and the US does. This program is worth a listen, but I’d do some digging on some of the facts before I denounced conservatives and hailed progressives.

Mike, the southern liberalShowing us that the playbook of the republican party has been a long time in the makingThis is a very interesting and disturbing look into the history that has brought us to this point. i’ve listen to three episodes, and it seems like it was perfect for the Republican party because their whole platform is about othering. because they’ve been telling poor white people and it’s everyone else’s fault except for the rich and powerful the ones that keep making the decisions to keep the poor poor.
-
covid docLong shadow season 2Amazing! I'm recommending to everyone ! Such a well done and tight production. I was stuck in my car when I arrived at work, could not bear to turn it off. So relevant to where we are now - required listening for all.
-
maudlin maudeAmazing seriesSeason 2 was interesting. But Season 1 was so powerful. The early episodes and last one describing the events of that day were very emotional. Even all these years later and having only watched from afar I get choked up remembering. And I learned so much in the middle episodes that I didn’t know with such specificity. I highly recommend but be forewarned it revisits the trauma we all felt to some extent on that terrible day.
-
theshycholoInformativeThanks for the incredible and precise information on a dark and disturbing part of our history. Very informative
-
lovethamajrepbrilliant throughline on the rise of the far right in AmericaExpert and concise reporting on the rise of the far right in the US. Great for entry-level listeners or history/news junkies.

-
Awesome kippesLong ShadowI really enjoyed both series. Series 1dealt with the 9/11 crisis & it was covered very well. I lived through it but found it very interesting. Series 2 dealt with the far right & how we got where we are. I found it very interesting & enligtening.
-
Baywood ResidentLong Shadow Season 2Exceptional. Thank you!
-
KTMac10Good history - one sided viewWhile many of these groups are scum, this series paints everyone with the same broad brush which minimizes the evil of some, and overstates the evil of others. It’s a political hit piece which groups anyone of a conservative political view as a terrorist.
-
Igormania775The bestIt’s so easy to forget the onslaught of right wing extremism and all the warnings, all the conspiracy theories, and the limited resources applied to the situation by the federal government. From Ruby Ridge to 911 to Trump/racism and eventually Jan 6. All put in perspective thoughtfully. A++
-
rolyr93Long Shadow!!This podcast masterfully combines meticulous research, insightful interviews, and compelling storytelling to shed light on the underlying causes and consequences of the far right’s ascent. The hosts skillfully navigate through the intricate web of socioeconomic, political, and cultural dynamics, ensuring listeners gain a deep understanding of this phenomenon. HIGLY RECOMMENDED (specially 2nd season) to better understand today’s political arena in our country
-
kat%#*$Always Interesting/Always terrifying!A VERY well done podcast from the trailer to the last episode. Can’t wait to hear next season.
-
J-DawhgBalanced and MeaningfulThis is a really well done podcast thus far. Four episodes in, and there’s nothing “new”presented. The skill is in making the connections and presenting objective information in a way that shouldn’t alienate those only tangentially related to the movement. Not presenting the US government as an infallible institution is also an honest approach I’ve appreciated. Balance is hard to achieve in our current times, and I’m curious how/if that can continue in subsequent episodes. I think it is only natural that some might feel the podcast is a hit piece. For those on the far right/left, I am sure the understanding of balance is skewed. For the average American who is moderate or right/left of center like me, this will likely resonate. By no means is the podcast suggesting all conservatives are far right… the implication is some are, and it’s important to begin to understand why.
-
Florida-guyWOW!!!!!Very informative, with audio I have never heard before I am learning a lot of new info
-
BrentRNA must listen history lesson to understand our current dangersGraff excels at synthesizes historical events and illustrating how they linked to future events. His book on 9/11 was riveting and as a bonus has and excellent voice for narration. The first season was a companion to the book. The second season connects the events of Ruby Ridge, Waco, Oklahoma City, the rise of far-Right media, and the Bundy standoff lead to January 6. It also acts a warning to the need to stay vigilant about the dangers that still exist. Highly recommended.
-
Bee KaayImportant historical context, exceptional storytellingBoth seasons provided deep dives into major historical events in the US. I found myself shocked at some piece of info during almost every episode. Highly recommend if you’re looking for historical context for many of our current problems wrapped in exceptional storytelling and easy to understand analysis. I’ll be hoping a season 3 is in the works.
-
JosTAussieExcellent podcastBoth seasons are full of well presented information and the stories are very engaging.
-
cfarm8503Far LeftBetter talk about the far left in season 3. This seems like MSM propaganda. If you have blue hair, enjoy CNN, MSNBC, ABC, PBR, Young Turks, etc. then I’m sure you’ll like this podcast. Fox News is far right? You have to be kidding me haha!!
