Failed Utopia

23

This is a podcast about utopian ideas and paradise lost. We look at utopian concepts from the past, present and future, as well as utopian societies and communes, which promise the world to eager followers but inevitably fail when it all starts to unravel. Some of these utopias just fall apart, while others devolve into true horrors and even brutal cults. I’ll break down what these groups’ leaders were thinking, what attracted their devotees in the first place, and how it all went wrong.

    This podcast is great, except…..
I started out listening to this podcast not knowing what to expect and loved the first episode. The amount of research and Anna’s voice makes it very worth while to listen to. Her politics on the other hand, are a bit much and make the podcast overall not as enjoyable. Relating the Republican Party to a cult is over the top and makes me want to not listen to another episode. It’s ridiculous to suggest that half the country is a cult. Other than that I like the podcast. I just fast forward through the current political stuff.

    Failed Utopia continues to enlighten
Just listened to Love Has Won episode. Another perceptive examination of our human propensity to join and embrace cults. Anna’s storytelling skills shine as usual, and include several fascinating diversions. After the episode, I found myself thinking about the history of our mainstream religions and their histories of cult-like activities. And of course, the current Republican Party has many of the signs of a cult. Anna continues to illuminate the deeply cultish aspects of our human condition.

    Turn off the music
This is a good podcast but for some reason they play music the entire time not just at the beginning or end like normal.

    Here For the Cult Stuff
i absolutely love this podcast. My brother recommended this podcast to me, knowing my love for true crime, cults and anything related. I sat down and listened to all the episodes so far in one sitting. Not only is the podcast well researched and presented, but also explained in a way that helps its listeners understand why these events took place, like in the case of jonestown. Can’t wait to see what other topics are going to be covered in the future!

    SUCH. A. FASCINATING. PODCAST.
Anna does an excellent job of compiling sources and information to present these utopias to you in a creative and easy-to-understand way. The episodes often lead me down a path of wanting to know more and more about these peculiar organizations. On top of that, this pod is also very well produced. Thank you Anna for sharing your knowledge with us! JB

    Fun podcast
Wow what a fun podcast! I found it both interesting and humorous. Anna is very easy to listen to and love hearing about all the wild utopian experiments that have taken place over the years. Maybe I’ll join one to break the monotony...this podcast will definitely be on my favorites list! WW
