Scripture First

13

Three millennials sit down with Lutheran theologians to understand how Scripture is working in our lives. God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, sin, faith, forgiveness, Luther, and more are on the table as Mason Van Essen, Kiri Haugen, and Adam Guthmiller discuss each week's upcoming lectionary Bible passage with Luther House of Study's theologians to hear the context in and around Scripture before it's preached in church.

    My Main Sermon Preparation
Luther House of Study provides these invaluable resources each week. For years, I have used Luther House as my first source for preparing my sermons each week. The faculty is top notch. If you’re looking for a clear means for “handing over the goods” as the dear Dr. James Nestingen used to say, then this podcast is for you.

The Truth will make us free!
It’s no big secret that the Bible isn’t always easy to understand. The people giving this podcast ask regular people questions for us laypersons. It’s so easy to get confused by the secular worldview. Scripture First removes that confusion. Thanks!!

    Keep the questions coming Kiri!
This podcast is how I start my week. I greatly enjoy the text study, and especially appreciate the questions that Kiri is willing to ask. They are typically the questions that all of us have, but are reluctant to voice. Keep it up, it is greatly appreciated. Thank you all for the Work the Lord does through you… we are truly blessed. Straight Gospel (while addressing the law)
The crew at Luther House break down the ELCA lectionary in an accessible way without watering down and of the promise of Christ. This podcast has been a critical part of my discernment of my call to ministry.

    Great Podcast
I love this podcast and it’s one that I listen to every episode. I give 4/5 stars because I personally think it would flow better if the engine/foundation of the podcast wasn’t the students questions. I’d like to hear the teachers teach the text and then the students ask questions as they have them, rather than their questions drive the podcast.

Great content but a few distractions
Let me start by saying - my friends and I receive a lot from this podcast and are grateful to all involved for your time and labors. However, quite regularly, there is a level of over-familiarity or flippancy from the younger people (one in particular) towards the teachers that can be very distracting. To the younger members: while I’m not against humor or having a good time, remember you are in a conversation with fathers and a mother in the Lord. This is high privilege and not to be taken lightly. Some of the smart comments and even the way you address the teachers, ie. “Paulson” instead of “Dr. Paulson” can be very distracting and keep people from hearing the Good News that is spoken during these segments. This is not about the letter, but a heart to honor; also remembering that many others are listening and need an example of how to give honor and relate to men and women that are over them. Again, thank you for all that you do, and may the Lord continue to bless your work.

    Excellent podcast!
Clearest distinction of law and gospel. Great insight on current events, history, and theology having Christ proclaimed as the center always.

    Great podcast!
Fantastic teaching for the one preparing to preach, or for anyone wanting to dive deeper into the lectionary’s assigned pastors. The teachers have great insight and I love the input of the students!!

    God's Gift to the Church
Thank you Luther House of Study for proclaiming the gospel in its truth and purity, for helping us see and make the distinction between Law and Gospel, and for clearly revealing what scripture says about us as fallen, bound in our sin, sinners who need a rescue that can only come from outside ourselves. Through your conversations, we come to learn that true freedom is found in the Gospel of Christ Jesus and that it is by his finished work, his death and resurrection from the dead, that our sin is forgiven and that life and salvation is ours, given purely and soley as gift. I could never be good enough or do enough if it were up to me. Thanks be to God that he doesn't give me what I deserve (wrath) but gives me what I don't deserve (mercy). And this mercy comes to me and to you, dear reader, as a promise delivered with these words from God, "I forgive you. Your sin is no longer counted against you." Amen... so be it, Lord.

    Best sermon prep!
This podcast is essential to my sermon prep! Hearing questions that the people in the pews are asking, as well as getting preached to myself, frees me to preach the texts as they are written. Thank you LHOS!

Clear Distinction of Law and Gospel
A wonderful discussion of law and Gospel. This podcast is a helpful review of the lectionary texts for the week ahead. This is worth your time. Steven Paulson is of course great.

    Worship preparation
Hearing the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel text and listening to a focused discussion between earnest and curious Christians provide me with wonderful directions for preaching. The open format allows for consideration of questions and doubts that each one of us may have. The podcast does not seek to dispense the truth or demand an interpretation, but rejoices in the mercy that Jesus Christ pours out upon sinners. Great stuff!

    More, Please
I grew up in a small Southern town where, if I said, “I’m Lutheran,” I would hear whispers and perceive implications that I was not a Christian. I was baptized as an infant and confirmed at my Lutheran church, but I have always struggled to understand why others judged Lutherans as not practicing Christianity “by The Book.” I’m grateful for the opportunity to hear Lutheran scholars explain and defend my beloved niche in the Christian faith.
