Super Ordinary

100

We all know the story of the charming underdog who gets blessed with powers beyond their control after a freak accident and spends the rest of their life fighting for the greater good of mankind. But what if those abilities came from inside you, from the very worst part of you, and there was nothing you could do to control them? What if every time you tried to help someone, things spiraled out of control, and all you did was cause more damage?

Recognized by the Austin Film Festival, Super Ordinary is the story of a girl who finds out she has super powers, only to find out that they’re connected to her debilitating panic attacks, and therefore nearly uncontrollable. This narrative podcast serves as Anika’s attempt to tell her side of the story after having already been cast as a villain in her world.

Great story but you gotta get past the swearing
I love this story, and I want to share it with other people! However it’s just something you can’t listen to out in public or in the office because of quite a few swear words or ‘explicit’ content. Anyways awesome story line, intricate characters you will fall in love with or totally hate, and tons of content that just blows your mind. I’m a sucker for heroes, but to watch an anti hero make the best of her situation is what really blew my mind. Keep up the great work! I need more content to inspire me!

TOO MUCH SWEARING FOR KIDS LIKE ME!!!!!!!
I listened to the first episode of this podcast because I don’t really have any podcasts to listen to and there was way too much swearing!!!! I have decided not to listen anymore! Inappropriate! I. Don’t. Like. It!!!! You can keep swearing, but I won’t listen anymore!!!😡

    Starts great but fades fast
The first season of this podcast is brilliant. Great metaphor for mental illness, great acting, and a streamlined story that tells another side of people who are misunderstood. Season 2 and beyond destroys that. A character is dropped completely, and his trauma is dismissed a really cruel way. The storylines get confusing, and the writing gets sloppy. Also: this is an audio medium, a character who’s power is yelling isn’t great. I keep hoping for it to get better, but I’m not hopeful. The show keeps trying to be kind to people with mental illness, but ends up being extremely cruel and dismissive to anyone who’s not the main character.

    Confusing, Annoying, But Good
This show is great. But. I did get super confused trying to follow the plot through various characters and times. I was very lost S1, mostly lost S2. Most of Season 3 was a bit easier to follow — they started using names a bit more and that was a giant help. But I’m still unsure what has happened in some key moments to some key characters — or who is even in certain scenes. Also, having one character’s super powers triggered by panic attacks is really interesting and affirming, but having multiple characters hyperventilating a lot just gets repetitive. It seems the show was starting in one direction and is now going a totally different direction with mostly new characters, and I feel even if I listened through again I’d be even more confused about what happened to some of the original characters. But it’s also pretty great. So ... ?

    SO MUCH SWEARING
I’m a kid and have been looking for a podcast when I stumbled across this but I started the first episode and there was so much swearing in the first few minutes that I was dumbfounded and immediately decided to stop listening. I wish this podcast could have been more kid friendly.

    Great podcast but
I wish the transition music kills me. It messes up the mood of the episodes. I wish it was softer and less river dancy

    Excellent and exciting!
If you enjoy well written, expertly preformed, and dynamic characters, this show is for you. It’s about “super heroes” only sort of, it’s much more about what it is to be different, morality, mental health, and duty to those around us. I love this show, the relationships between characters drive the story and the characters themselves are all compelling in their own way. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

One of the best out there
With the excess of superhero content to consume right now, Super Ordinary is a breath of fresh air. I love a good superhero story, but this podcast succeeds where a lot of stories fall short. Really strong writing and sound design and INCREDIBLE characters! Plus with each episode being 15-20ish minutes, they’re super quick to binge. Give it a listen! -@TeaWithDragons on Twitter

    Excellently done & original
Marissa Tandon created quite a world, deconstructing superheroes. Her villian is a teenager with an anxiety disorder that triggers her power, and her heroes are... messy at best. Great writing and performances.

Super Ordinary Is Anything But Ordinary
Considering the glut of superhero movies coming out of Hollywood, it always surprised me there aren't more ADs focusing on them. If you love superhero stories you should check this out. If you're feeling drained and exhausted by the Marvel/DC formula you should still check this out. If you're a fan of superpowers in costume this is a fresh take that is unique, well-written, and a very satisfying listen. Especially if you're the sort that is often left curious about what the "bad guys" might be thinking. Everyone knows Beowulf, but Grendel had a story to tell as well. The acting is excellent, and the sound design simple, clean and effective. It’s a very good superhero story and a very good piece of audio fiction. Give it a listen!

    Super fun and important!
Should have left a review for this amazing show earlier. It deserves all the attention. We teach creative writing and speculative fiction and love to use this show as an example of how to tell a familiar story in a new creative way. Anxiety and panic attacks are real problems that a lot of people deal with and our college students really appreciate listening to this show that showcases the struggle in a way they’ve never seen (heard) before. Besides using it in lessons, we just love listening. The acting is some of the best we’ve heard in audio drama. It really is a beautiful show.

    Your new favorite heroes
This show so perfectly finds the nuance between what it means to be a hero & a villain, a kid or an adult, dealing with something out of your control or helping someone who is — the acting, the production, even the promo images are super (pun intended)

    Need more sound cues
So the acting is excellent but I give up. The way this show cuts from scene to scene, it is impossible to follow if something is happening in the present or the past.

    #superpowerpods
I’d like to thank Twitter and the podcast community for being absolute gems and somehow directing Super Ordinary onto my doorstep, because it was immediate love. The characters are fantastic. There’s only a few episodes out as of now, and for me to already feel like I have a solid grasp on each character—especially Anika, but also all the others—is fantastic. And I’m a sucker for superheroes—and villains. Most podcasts that I end up listening to have years of content for me to binge, but Super Ordinary is fantastic, new, and I’m ready to hang out for the long haul. It’s gonna be worth it.

    Already hooked
Super ordinary is proof that a teenage girl’s superhero story can be told with just as much badassery as her male counterparts! I’m only 2 episodes deep and already hungry for more!! Highly recommend to all out there in need of a juicy narrative pod

    Listen to this show!!!
This show comes with a great soundscape, fascinating characters, an intriguing plot hook, and it’s only one episode so far. This is the super powered story you didn’t know you needed. Already they have built interesting relationships between characters and have me falling for someone they are telling me is a super villain. If this is what they can do in one episode I have no doubt that the rest of this show will be incredible. So why are you still reading this? Do yourself a favor and give it a listen. I promise you won’t regret your choice.

    This is the Inspiration.
THIS PODCAST CHANGED MY LIFE. Once upon a time, I was but a poor pauper scrounging around my days and night searching for my purpose in life. Then one fateful day, I found this podcast. Could it be? Had I discovered the eighth wonder of the world? I was drunk with happiness and the hangover would surely last a life. I found my purpose. I would become a missionary spreading the good word of Super Ordinary. I shall knock on every door. I shall boast in every tweet. I shall go to my local IHOP location, burst through the doors and connect my phone and play this podcast through their loudspeaker AUX cord. I shall not rest until every ear has consumed this podcast. Thank you Marissa. My eyes and heart are open. I have learned to love again.
