Ghibliotheque - A Podcast About Studio Ghibli

62

Welcome to the Ghibliotheque, the podcast that leafs through libraries of films from the world’s greatest animation studios.

In 2018, Michael Leader, an avowed Studio Ghibli fanatic, sat down with Jake Cunningham, who had never seen any of the Studio’s work before. Together they looked at the history behind Ghibli's films (including Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke), and got a critical perspective from Jake as a first-time viewer. They covered all of Studio Ghibli's films, visited Japan on the ultimate Ghibli pilgrimage, and have since interviewed artists, animators and filmmakers who have either worked on or have been deeply inspired by Ghibli's films. With their co-host Steph Watts, they have also branched out to cover filmographies of other studios and filmmakers whose work has revolutionised animation, from Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Hosoda to Cartoon Saloon and Henry Selick.

Great Pod But I can barely Hear You
I love their insights in animated films and the industry as a whole. I’ve been finding lately though I have the volume all the way up on my headphones and the audio is still quite low and I have to strain a bit to hear, especially with background noises around me. Keep up the great episodes!

    Found This After FFC
I’m a huge fan of Maisie’s podcast Frank Film Club, and I thoroughly enjoyed the episode where Jake was a guest there. Before that, I had no idea there was an entire podcast dedicated to lovers of Miyazaki’s films. This was a big find, indeed. I myself very nearly led the charge against Jake when he said that he thought ‘Mononoke’ was boring. BUT, after hearing his explanation, I can at least see where he’s coming from, even if I agree or not. I am glad that he walked it back after his re-watch though. Would have been a hassle to lead a mob to his door to punish the heresy. Anyway, great podcast, very well put together. I’ll look forward to checking out more episodes.

IMMENSE love for Ghibli, but just cannot connect with this podcast.
I have an immense love for Ghibli films. Yet, while wading through most of the Ghibliotheque episodes, I struggled to connect emotionally and intellectually with this podcast. While mine is only one experience, too often I found frustration and disappointment with the opinions and direction of the two hosts. There is so, so, so much to discuss about the layered themes and stories presented by Ghibli, yet the podcast conversations too often dawdled at the surface, missing the depths of meaning and convictions that I connect with and am so strongly compelled to rejoice and celebrate. Also, no effort was made to learn and use respectful pronunciation of names.

    Scraping through the animation podcasts....
Brings up a winner. The Ghiblioteque folks have serious discussion about the greatest films in the world. I have learned a few things and mostly agreed with them. Perhaps I'll have to change my rating when they get to Earthsea, but I hope not! For me: perfect length, good audio, soothing British voices. I'm all in!

    Wonderful!
I don’t normally write reviews, but I feel the need to. This is an amazing podcast, as someone who grew up watching and loving Ghibli. I can’t wait until you talk about my favorites, The Cat Returns, Howls Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Nausicaa. Please keep making more episodes, it’s brought be back to being younger. The love shows in these episodes. Thank you so much for it.

    Enjoyable Podcast
Good discussions and reviews of Ghibli movies. They give a lot of context about when and how the movies were made. I'd prefer if they spent a longer time on the synopsis of each movie, particularly some of the lesser known/seen ones.
