stldmb56This show is thoughtful and compelling propagandaThis show is worth listening to for anyone is feels strongly about the issue of assisted dying. Denton presents many interesting and compelling stories and arguments in favor of assisted dying. It is important to recognize from the start (as does Denton) that this is a show with an angle. Dentin’s objective is persuade people to support assisted dying legislation. He make a persuasive case, but it is no way insurmountable. I walk away from this podcast still firm in my opposition to assisted dying. Denton’s questions are motivated by a particular political and moral ideology, and his arguments are exclusively in the domain of choice, suffering, and workability of the laws. He makes too much of a particular notion of the ‘slippery slope’ arguments and of religion and does not consider some of the most important questions. This podcast would have been better had he talked to thoughtful bioethicists and philosophers. This show is worth listening to, but it is one-sided, sometimes lacks nuance, and leaves a lot that could have been considered on the table. I wonder if he will do a new season in which he investigates and considers the current situation in places like Canada or the other places he has already discussed. Nearly 500 people died of death with dignity in Oregon last year.

DAVE 141What it means to be HumanThank You Andrew Denton and to your entire crew for producing this series. The first series was amazing. This second series, so far, goes even deeper. This is THE toughest topic possible for a podcast and you do it justice. After listening to 3 episodes so far in this 2nd season, I am constantly amazed at the raw humanity expressed by the physicians, palliative care workers, the families, and, most of all, the individuals faced with this most difficult of choices. (And I continue to be amazed by the utter callousness and inhumanity of the legislators and “religious” leaders fighting to deny people this most precious right - the right to control your own life and your own body.) It’s hard to understand how anyone can listen to the real-life stories of the people directly affected and still work and advocate against their right to chose how, and when, to “Say Goodby”. The first episode, “The Belly of The Beast”, is a perfect example. The family of the young man who suffered from motor neuron disease shows so much love and fortitude, but also a touching humor, in the face of life’s greatest challenge. This is a vital and life-affirming podcast which you should listen to. You will cry, but also laugh, and in the end, you’ll feel the compassion.

fincleThoughtful, poignant, illuminatingThis series is a long form deep dive into the many perspectives on euthanasia. Denton draws his own conclusions on the topic towards the end but the series gives a lot of fair space for other points of view. It really does justice to such a complex, heart wrenching and fundamental question of human rights (what ever your perspective). After listening to the whole series I felt deeply a sense of the loss, love and tensions that lie just beneath the surface but often not aired . Denton is in a league of his own for his ability to tie together so many poignant experiences and lines of thought into such a narrative. I’m genuinely a better person for listening.

Stephen LeadAmazing and so well put-togetherThis is an important topic and it’s handled with a supreme touch by Andrew Denton. Even though he shares his own views up-front, he manages to stay dispassionate and open-minded throughout his journey. I really hope they sort out voluntary euthanasia laws before it’s my turn to shuffle off - hopefully this podcast will be a step in the right direction.

alicejoykInteresting topicMany people avoid the topic so I commend them just for having the guts to talk about it. Dark, but it will happen to all of us. Would like to see more topics not just doctors but all sorts of other stories.
