Only Podcast to Address Newcastle Owndership
Thanks for being the only football podcast to bring up the ownership of Newcastle during the days after their EFL final win.

    The Drunken Sot…
… sobbed in agony as the Daniel Levys embarrassed The Drunken Sot’s owner, Lady Alice, and the pathetic Manchester Divided. *** Even worse, The Drunken Sot’s hated Manchester City flogged the MbS-owned Newcastle, 4-nil. *** Try as they feebly might, The Drunken Sot; Giggling Maxine; Johnny, the Jacob Rees-Mogg of the Football Press Box; and the rest of the Fleet Street Manure Department failed to defend their master, Lady Alice; his chump, Lady Ratcliffe; and the humiliating Manchester Divided.

More homophobia from Troy Townsend, please!
The listeners demand it! We want to hear why it’s perfectly okay for professional footballers to use their idiot religion to make life worse for gay people in general, and gay footballers in particular. C’mon, you cowards, let’s do a full episode with Troy to explain his Holier-Than-Thou point of view! I mean, Kick It Out has done SO MUCH to end racism — to the point that even prominent black footballers have regularly criticized the organization’s uselessness — I’m DESPERATE to hear why The Great Troy thinks arcane, totally irrelevant religious claptrap trumps basic human rights. Keep giving this jackass a platform, Football Weekly, you’re doing great!!!

    I’m finished
I’ve been a listener for years. Back to the Jimbo days. But there are too many good podcasts that focus on sports. I don’t turn on sports podcasts to listen to politics. Phillipe’s lazy journalism the day after the US election tipped it for me. Trump wins and all of the sudden the 2026 World Cup host needs to be called into question? Is this the same guy who typically does such great investigative journalism? What policies changed from November 4 to 5? Nothing. Yet you shoehorn that into the podcast? Please. It’s insulting to anyone with a brain who can think for him or herself. It’s especially insulting to this American - who has never voted for Trump. So long team. I’ll get my football and soccer fix elsewhere.

    LGBTQ Rights…
Guys, from a straight perspective, I don’t know one person in my community who wants to deny LGBT rights…. It’s simply a fallacy. The problem is organizations such as yourselves and the Premier League pushing this agenda upon everyone. It’s no different than the BLM race hustle. Choosing to force an agenda like this is discriminatory in and of itself. You just gotta stop. Let go of ALL of the agendas. Rainbow armbands don’t do anything except point out that “we want to push this on you”. And yes, I don’t believe in the gay lifestyle, but I’m not denying anyone’s rights to it? Go be gay. But don’t try to force it on the rest of society, especially children. It’d be no different than forcing a campaign for the acceptance of people below 6 ft. tall. Nobody’s saying we don’t accept them. We just don’t want your subjective causes pushed upon society.

    Zero stars
I used to enjoy this podcast and listened religiously until, in classic Guardian style, they decide to jump on the bandwagon and pick on Israel, comparing them to Russia, with Phillipe going on a whole outrageously biased rant. Then when Jews were hunted down in Amsterdam, there was a cursory mention, barely discussing the disgraceful occurrence, and of course then basically blaming the Jews for a clearly pre meditated attack because a bunch of them (wrongly and stupidly) pulled a flag down the day before and chanted some moronic songs. Well done Guardian, truly showing your colours and losing a listener in the process. But as I’m Zionist, you probably don’t think I deserve to listen anyway. Oh and Jonny Liew, you really need to read more about the whole situation and some history!
  • SethFourTen
    Not for everyone
I’ve been subscribing to this podcast since the South African World Cup, I can no longer stand to listen to heartless antisemites of the guardian. Their calls for human rights for everyone except Jews betrays everything I thought they stood for and it breaks my heart. Free the hostages. Never again.
  • Jim1999
    Bravo Phillipe
As an American living in the USA, I’d like to comment on Phillipe’s statement on USA hosting the 2026 World Cup. I’d like to say thank you and very well said.

    Gets better with age.
This show has aged well - Max can coax a laugh out of almost any discussion but he’s never phony and is willing to be serious and doesn’t hide from heavier subject matter. May it continue.

Absolute pleasure listening to these people. I’m in Detroit Michigan.

    Used to enjoy the show
But over the course of time, I found myself listening to them less and less. And the times I did listen, I found it becoming a chore to get through an episode. It not being a “fun” or “banter” podcast is fine, but it doesn’t make up for that aspect with high level football analysis. It’s either very on the surface, match highlight reels levels of insight, or reactive punditry to football-narrative drivel from other outlets, such as Sky Sports, and their punditry. Neither of which provides any interesting or insightful view point from the sport they cover. Barring an appearance from the likes of say, Nicky Bandini, most of these guests and hosts have either smug, stale, or uninteresting contributions, filled with lazy narratives and cliches. As a result, the podcast has really gone downhill over the years.
  • The Lozmeister General
    Biased, misinformed, tired drivel.
Just a really bad, dishonest and lazy ‘look’ at football. This is not analysis.

    Smart Group
I often learn from FW conversations. Please continue to think hard (and with joy) about the game and how it could be even better if we could pull it out of the fire, i.e., awful sports business models, referee abuse, diving/simulation, sexist/racist/homophobic fan behavior…. Speak up for change.

Football pod for people who don’t like football
Stopped listening to this pod for a while. Despite Max being a decent host so many of the guests show only a passing interest or enjoyment for the game. Drawn back in by the need for more Euro 2024 content I came back and if anything it’s got worst. Barry is barely coherent - possibly drunk; and the show rambles along skimming the surface without insight or interest. Making a great tournament seem less enjoyable.
  • DeWiltz
If you only want surface level analysis the pod is entertaining
Edit: shows analysis has really gone down hill. Clutching at pearls over whatever sky sports said the day before. Started listening 9 years ago and now I’ve unfollowed Very similar to sky or espnfc or any other “cover the entire league” coverage. Very narrative driven. Pretty much take what is trending on twitter or whatever sky talk about and welp so will these guys. Use to have more varied analysis but now it seems pretty mainstream

    Max and Barry
There is just something soothing to listen to the contrasting personalities of Max and Barry. They are the Odd Couple of football podcasts and their enduring relationship (or lack thereof) during troubled times is something to make you smile when everything around is such a stench.
  • WorldWideWinder
    Not fit for purpose
That’s the British phrase right? If you want fairly uninformed opinions that often miss the point then the is is the pod for you!
  • wadxercv
Only listen when Barry is on
I only listen when Barry is on but enough with the left wing moral compasses when criticizing Jordan Henderson. Go after him for his poor form, not his views. Barry's humor, gruff and honesty is the only reason i still subscribe.

    Started Good But Now..
Became a football fan over the last three years and this was my first podcast. I really enjoy all of the hosts and guest but it’s become not an enjoyable listen. I come for football and good vibes but so many shows are focused on the negative aspects of the football world. I know that’s important but I think all of that deserves it’s own podcast. Frankly, many of those topics are a hard listen and not how I want to spend my listening hours. My caveat is that I throughly enjoyed the podcast with Mr. Townsend and that on his personal grief. So I guess I’m also a hypocrite.
  • markcre
    Just a good listen.
Like a favorite jacket. Comfortable and relaxing. Great characters and I like how they are expanding their line up. Live shows in the US please.
  • Jollyjim
    It’s just fun
All the wankers on here whining about the coverage of their favorite team or of serious issues in the sport are missing the point. Max, Barry and the panel cover the soccer (sorry I’m American) through a Premier League lens but with a wider focus, they have some serious views which are threaded in with the fun of the games (matches) and some entertainment to boot. People complaining on here don’t know how to enjoy themselves at all.
  • Harvey Heatherington
    Great all around podcast
My uncle told me not to ever trust 1 Star or 5 star reviews, but if anyone was ever deserving of a 5 star, it’s Football Weekly. I’ve been listening for about two years now, and it’s my favorite podcast. Beautifully balanced mixture of hosts, guests, content, and humor.

Never miss. I understand there's a competitive podcast, albeit somewhat stuffy. Does it rhyme with "mathletic?" In lieu of an in-person tour, here in the Pacific Northwest, may I have a life-size cardboard cutout of Barry with select voicing to shoo away the tourists?

    Hilarious, Insightful and Brave

I love Guardian Football Weekly, they have a great rotation of guests, but the best thing about it is the tremendously likable host, Max Rushden.

    Consistent Quality
Been a long time listener for close to a decade now and brevity and insight are welcome additions to car rides, runs, and bike rides. Great football knowledge, and great fun. As an American it can be tough to find content and news on our regular sports networks for football (proper) so Football Weekly has been a great help over the years.
  • Njinnj
    favorite football podcast
After trying many other football podcasts, this is my favorite. It’s both informative and funny and I also like the range of panelists and all their different accents.
  • JFPIV89
    Very honestly
    The best football podcast ever.
  • Sunday1824
    It’s pretty ok
An enthusiastic Englishman, a grumpy Irishman, and a host of guests (nicki bandini is the best, been listening to her for many years) combine to make a somewhat decently enjoyable way to waste an hour of your life. 5 stars out of 10, but apple only provides 5 stars. Lucky you, Football Daily.

    Fantastic podcast
I started listening during the 2022-23 season and it’s easily my favorite football podcast, and one of my top few favorites overall. Max and Barry are great and there’s an excellent group of other panelists, including Jonathan Wilson, author of Inverting the Pyramid. They do have very thoughtful discussions of issues like sportswashing and treatment of LGBT+ folks, so if you are scared of catching the “woke mind virus,” this podcast may not be for you.
  • DWats21
    Best football podcast
Title says it all. This is the best podcast for catching up on the weekend premier league games. Max and Barry are tremendous together, along with all the writers who come on each week. Best podcast for football talk, while actually having a moral compass. It’s rare these days. Love the show
